I see a lot of guys asking this same question: "How do I make a career out of welding?"

It’s a great question, but honestly? It’s the wrong one to start with.

The real question you need to ask yourself is: What actually motivates you?

Welding isn't just one job. It’s a hundred different paths. If you don't align your job with your actual personality, you’re going to end up miserable and burnt out.

Think about what you want your life to look like:

• Want to be creative? Don't go look for a factory job. Buy a cheap Harbor Freight welder, setup in your garage, and start building things on the weekends to see what you like.
• Want to make serious money fast? Look into structural steel, pipe, or oil field welding. It’s hard work, but the cash is there.
• Want to be on a badass team? Find a high-end fab shop or custom auto shop. Go in there, offer to sweep the floors, keep your mouth shut, and ask the old-timers questions when they have a free minute.

There are job openings everywhere, but money won't make you happy if the daily grind sucks. Before you start applying, sit down and answer these questions honestly:

1. Shop vs. Field: Do you want to stay in a warm shop every day, or do you want to be outside fighting the weather?
2. Travel vs. Home: Do you want to live out of a suitcase for big travel pay, or be home every night for dinner?
3. Fabricator vs. Welder: Do you want to blueprints, cut, and make things? Or do you just want to sit in a booth and burn rod all day?
4. The Environment: Are you okay with heavy smoke, sparks, and loud noise (Stick/Flux-core)? Or do you want a cleaner, quieter environment (Precision TIG)?
5. School vs. Dirt: Do you want to spend thousands on welding school, or are you willing to start from the bottom at a shop and learn on the job for free?

Here is the bottom line: At the end of the day, a welding shop doesn't care about a fancy resume. They care if you can pass their weld test. But before you pick up the torch, figure out what you want your life to look like.

Find the alignment, get paid, and enjoy the craft.
